Oban Distillery is well worth the visit. The superb
45 minute tour ends with a dram of whisky. Oban laso
has many of the high street names you would expect to
find in a bustling town. Additionally it has a growing
number of small businesses that illustrate the wealth
of talent and skills in Argyll. These range from potters,
quilters, woodworkers, jewellers, basket weavers, knitters
and candle makers, to name but a few.
The best way to view the real beauty of he West Coast
is by boat. There are planty of companies in the area
that will show you around the coastline and some of
the islands.
You don't need to be a fanatical castle seeker to enjoy
exploring the castles of the West Coast. There is a
host of castles - particularly ruined castles - adorning
the landscape. Castles such as those at Dunollie, Dunstaffnage,
Kilchurn and Fincharn are all within a short distance
of Oban. The haunted castle at Barcaldine, just 8 miles
north of Oban offers a great day out for the family.
Nothing is more Scottish than Pipe Bands and Highland
Games. During the summer the popular Games are at Kilmore,
Taynuilt, Tobermory on Mull, and the Oban Games, part
of the world-famous Argyllshire Gathering. Pipers come
from all over the world to compete at the Gathering
and winning the Gold Medal is one of the supreme accolades
in the piping world.
