Edinburgh |
Edinburgh is one of the world's greatest cities. Its
dramatic location and its amazing architectural heritage
dominate every view of the city. Discovering Edinburgh
is like discovering Scotland. Everything that you associate
with the Scots is here in Edinburgh. There's the exquisite
architecture of Robert Adam and the immortal poetry
of Robert Burns. There's the legacy of Scotch whisky,
the delicate taste of Scotch salmon and the traditions
of clan tartans and tweeds.
Not forgetting the dominance of Edinburgh Castle in
the heart of the city, there are many sights as you
walk around its narrow and ancient streets. With its
cultural standing not only in Scotland but the world,
it will soon charm any visitor spending time here.
The majestic city of Edinburgh, known as Dineidyn in
gaelic, has a long and sometimes turbulant history.
It has always been closely tied with royalty, both Scottish
and English, since the invasion of King Edwin of Northumbria
in the 7th Century, to the current Scottish residence
of the British Royal family at Holyroodhouse Palace.
Located on the southern shores of the Firth of Forth
in south eastern Scotland, it is dominated by the famous
Edinburgh Castle situated on Castle Rock, some 250 feet
above the centre of the Old Town. The crowded tenements
of the historic Old Town contrast with the orderly grid
of the Georgian New Town, which in most other cities
would be an historic enclave by itself.
With its international airport 8 miles from the centre,
Waverley railway station situated in the heart of the
city and its highly scenic accessable road system, Edinburgh
is one of the easiest towns in Scotland to get to, or
use as a base for further exploration.
However, due to the easy access and the number of visitors
in the city, it can be difficult to get a room for the
night between May - mid-September. It is never too early
to make your booking in Edinburgh. Accommodation in
the capital and surrounding towns is widely available
at various budgets, from the humble camp sites to some
of the most luxurious hotels and castles in Scotland.
The most popular accommodation is small hotels and guest
houses and you will find the best of these featured
within our service.
Some great names of world importance have either studied,
lived, or worked in Edinburgh. Don't miss the opportunity
to walk in the footsteps of such giants as Alexander
Graham Bell, Charles Darwin, Sir Walter Scott and Robert
Louis Stevenson.
